English abstract

The essay deals with the provenance research according to the Kunstrückgabegesetz 2009 undertaken by the library of the Austrian Parliament. This research process consists of two phases. In 2010 a pilot study was carried out to find out whether there was a need for provenance research at all and – if it was – what amount of work would be necessary to complete the research. Due to the discovery of files in the library it was obvious very soon that there is a need for provenance research, mainly because the parliament building was used as Gauhaus and domicile of the NSDAP in Vienna between 1940 and 1945. The library of the parliament inherited between 15,000 and 20,000 books from the Gauhaus. Among these are many whose provenance is at least problematic. Apart from that the take-over of the books from the Gauhaus has had the effect that the library now has an extensive collection of NS literature. At present, those parts of the library holdings that were identified as relevant in the pilot study are being investigated systematically.

Der Aufsatz beschreibt die Durchführung einer Provenienzforschung im Sinne der Kunstrückgabegesetzes 2009 in der Bibliothek des österreichischen Parlaments. Die Arbeit wurde bzw. wird in zwei Stufen erledigt. Im Jahr 2010 wurde im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie erhoben, ob es in der Parlamentsbibliothek überhaupt einen Bedarf nach einer Provenienzforschung gibt, und wenn ja, welchen Aufwand das erfordern würde. Aufgrund von Aktenfunden in der Bibliothek stand sehr rasch fest, dass eine Provenienzforschung notwendig ist, vor allem weil das Parlamentsgebäude als Gauhaus und Sitz der NSDAP in Wien verwendet wurde und auf diesem Weg viele Bücher ungeklärter Herkunft in die Bibliothek gelangten. Die nach Kriegsende von der Bibliothek übernommenen umfangreichen Buchbestände (15.000–20.000 Bände) aus dem Gauhaus, weisen in zahlreichen Fällen problematische Provenienzen auf. Darüber hinaus führte diese Übernahme von Gauhaus-Beständen aber auch dazu, dass die Parlamentsbibliothek heute über eine sehr umfangreiche Sammlung von NS-Literatur verfügt. Derzeit werden die relevanten Bestände der Bibliothek, die in der ersten Phase bestimmt wurden, systematisch untersucht.
