English abstract

The current state of provenance research concerning the library of the Belvedere is described on the basis of statistic data from 1933 up to the present day. The acquisitions from 1942 to 1944 for the planned but never realized Prinz Eugen- Museum are pointed out. Due to the examination it can be noted that the Belvedere’s library was not a profiteer of the NS looting of private book collections. Eventually doubtful publications predominantly entered into the Belvedere’s possession through purchases in antiquarian bookshops.

German abstract

Der Stand der Provenienzforschung innerhalb der Bibliothek des Belvedere soll an Hand einer exakten Statistik von 1933 bis heute nachgezeichnet werden. Hervorgehoben werden die Ankäufe für das geplante aber nicht realisierte Prinz Eugen-Museum, die von 1942 bis 1944 getätigt wurden. Es kann auf Grund der Untersuchung festgestellt werden, dass die Hausbibliothek keine Nutznießerin des NS-Buchraubs war – eventuell verdächtige Druckschriften gelangten in erster Linie über den Kunstbuchhandel in den Bestand.
