English abstract

Within the framework of its functions of long-term preservation of the published cultural heritage and seeking to attract the attention of public authorities to the necessity for the integration into the space of the European electronic content, the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania has prepared a draft concept for preservation of movable cultural heritage, involving integration of memory institutions (libraries, museums and archives), digitization of the cultural heritage and creation of an integrated information system. In 2004 the professionals from the National Library Regina Varnienė (group manager), Gražina Bastauskienė, Teresė Gustienė and Jolita Steponaitienė prepared the project “Creation of the LIBIS Virtual Environment” for digitization of old and rare documents and access to these documents via a virtual library. The results of the latter project were of great help in drafting the feasibility study “Creation of the Integrated Virtual Library Information System” (2004). It was worked out by the Italian company A.R.S. Progetti S.r.l., assisted by Lithuanian experts. In addition to the feasibility study, a project application for the support from the EU Structural Funds was prepared and presented to the Central Project Management Agency on 15 September 2004. The owner and final beneficiary of the project is the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania; the Lithuanian Art Museum and the Lithuanian Archives Department are project partners. The publication presents the methodology for the Integrated Virtual Library Information System (IVBIS, Integrali virtuali bibliotekų informacinė sistema) based upon the model of the Open Archival Information System (ISO 14721: 2003). The article also analyzes the organizational and functional structure of IVBIS based on the Lithuanian Integrated Library Information System (LIBIS, Lietuvos integrali bibliotekų informacijos sistema), which is now active. The key aims and objectives are introduced together with the expected results. The publication focuses on preservation and identification of data and the data management system. It presents the most effective methods based on the analysis of special literature and practical implementation of the LIBIS Archive of Electronic Resources, as well as other LIBIS subsystems. The publication also analyses the IVBIS structure, which should be based on the model of the Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library, widely discussed in special literature. It also describes organization of the access to IVBIS based on the Blue View method that has been introduced by German specialists.
