English abstract

So far, students at medical faculties have intensively mainly used two services out of many, which specialized medical libraries have to offer: the textbook collection and the student reading room. Only towards the end of studies, in preparation of dissertations, do students take advantage of bibliographical databases and appropriate journals. During the last years, the medical curricula in many countries, including Germany and Austria, experienced considerable modifications. The reformation of the studies, which, in many cases, actually finds itself in the phase of implementation, is, in fact, a unique challenge for libraries. In support of medical studies, university lecturers and students expect information resources, library services and the relay of information competence, which should clearly surmount existing needs of the textbook collection and the student reading room, as shown in the available contribution, as example of the University Library of the Medical University of Vienna.

German abstract

Bisher haben Studierende an medizinischen Fakultäten die meiste Zeit ihres Studiums nur zwei Services ihrer medizinischen Fachbibliotheken, nämlich Lehrbuchsammlung und Studentenlesesaal, intensiv frequentiert; erst gegen Ende des Studiums wurden für die Dissertation auch bibliographische Datenbanken und Fachzeitschriften genutzt. In den letzten Jahren haben die medizinischen Curricula in vielen Ländern, unter anderem auch in Deutschland und Österreich, gravierende Änderungen erfahren. Die Neuorganisation des Studiums, die sich vielfach gerade in der Umsetzungsphase befindet, bringt auch für die Bibliotheken neue Herausforderungen. Zur Unterstützung des Medizinstudiums erwarten Dozenten und Studierende nun von ihrer Medizinbibliothek Informationsressourcen, Bibliotheksservices und die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz, was deutlich über die bisherigen Anforderungen für Lehrbuchsammlung und Studentenlesesaal hinausgeht, wie im vorliegenden Beitrag am Beispiel der Universitätsbibliothek der Medizinischen Universität Wien gezeigt wird.
