English abstract

The Library of the Dominican Monastery in Leoben closed in 1811. When the Dominican Monastery in Leoben was closed down in 1811, the monastery library was confiscated and transferred to Graz. Enclosed was a list of contents, which is now located in the Styrian State Archives. As far as can be reconstructed from the records that still exist, some of the collection was transferred to the "k. k. Lyzealbibliothek", as the library was then called. The majority of the books were however auctioned to the public. It may be assumed that the rest of the library stock was finally destroyed, which was the usual fate of collections that – from the enlightened perspective of "Josephinism" – were seen to be insignificant. Various archival documents, four contemporary catalogues and a handful of works that – due to their inscriptions – are clearly from the Leoben Monastery remain. With the aid of these sources, retained in the Styrian State Archives, the City Archive of Leoben and in the Graz University Library, a portrait of the lost library can be sketched. A recently discovered catalogue of transfers and auctions enables a relatively exact ascertation of those books taken on by the Graz University Library.
