English abstract

The International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) Area 0 was first included in the ISBD Consolidated Edition published in July 2011, as a replacement of the General Material Designation (GMD). This work briefly makes reference to the antecedents of area 0 and to the reasons that lead to its creation. Also,it details its structure, elements and examples of use and analyzes its compatibility with the MARC format, the RDA vocabularies and with FRBR model. Finally, in relation to the creation of this new area and to its application in the diversity of existing bibliographical resources, it reflects on the change of paradigm of cataloguing and the challenges in the teaching of cataloguing of non-book materials.

Spanish abstract

La Descripción Bibliográfica Internacional Normalizada (ISBD) Área 0 se incluyó por primera vez en la edición consolidada ISBD publicado en julio de 2011, en ​​reemplazo de la Designación general del material(DGM). Este trabajo hace una breve referencia a los antecedentes del área 0 y los motivos que llevan a su creación. Asimismo, detalla su estructura, elementos y ejemplos de uso y análisis de su compatibilidad con el formato MARC, los vocabularios de la RDA y con el modelo FRBR. Por último, en relación con la creación de esta nueva área y para su aplicación en la diversidad de los recursos bibliográficos existentes, se refleja un cambio de paradigma de la catalogación y los desafíos en la enseñanza de la catalogación de los materiales que no son libros.
