English abstract

This paper shows the clues to locate MOOCs in the life cycle of technological innovations characterized by a typical progression that starts as an emergent phenomenon with an excess of enthusiasm. Five facts in MOOCs current location point are analized. From this analysis, limitations, failures and probable evolution of open and on-line courses are pointed out. The paper concludes by stating that MOOCs help in the identification of problems, but are not their solution. The solution lies in answering three complex challenges, even though the bedrock is whether teachers are ready to devote themselves to the analysis of big data to understand their students, and to design and deliver courses which imply paying much more attention to students of different origins and conditions for a better understanding of cross-cultural learning.

Spanish abstract

En este trabajo se dan las claves para situar los MOOCs en el ciclo de vida de las innovaciones tecnológicas que tienen como característica una progresión típica que se inicia como fenómeno emergente acompañado de un exceso de entusiasmo. Se analizan cinco hechos en el punto actual de su evolución. Señalando, a partir de ese análisis, sus limitaciones, fracasos y las posibles evoluciones de los cursos abiertos on line. Se concluye diciendo que los MOOCs detectan unos problemas, pero no son su solución. La solución pasa por dar respuesta a tres desafíos complejos, aunque la cuestión de fondo es si los profesores están dispuestos a centrarse en el análisis de los "grandes datos" para la comprensión de los estudiantes. Y a diseñar e impartir cursos que supongan prestar mucha más atención a los estudiantes de diferentes orígenes y condiciones sobre la base de una mejor comprensión del aprendizaje intercultural.
