English abstract

This article reports a study conducted in sixteen Puerto Rican elementary, middle and high school libraries. Both the public and private sectors are included. Schools were selected from those public schools that have consistently achieved the standards required by law. Private schools were selected from those recognized as high quality institutions by a group of five education experts using a Delphi approach. The study was oriented to gather information as to the practices of school librarians in their effort to facilitate the development of information competencies (IC) among students. A comparative approach between both sectors was beyond the scope of the study, however interesting similarities and differences became evident. Findings include, a) successful strategies to develop IC, b) the benefits of coordination with the classroom teachers, and c) the need to infuse relevancy and pertinence in the tasks assigned. Particularly innovative or outstanding librarianship practices, however were not part of the findings.

Spanish abstract

Este artículo informa una investigación exploratoria realizada en 16 bibliotecas escolares públicas y privadas en Puerto Rico aplicando metodología cualitativa. Se seleccionaron diez (10) escuelas públicas que siempre han cumplido con los estándares académicos establecidos por Ley. Se incluyeron además igual número (10) de escuelas privadas que gozan de prestigio por su calidad entre la comunidad académica del país. Los investigadores visitaron todas las escuelas y entrevistaron a los bibliotecarios en torno a sus prácticas y condiciones de trabajo. El estudio reveló: a) prácticas exitosas que los bibliotecarios llevan a cabo en el proceso de facilitar el desarrollo de competencias informativas en sus estudiantes; b) la importancia de la coordinación con los maestros en este proceso y c) lo crítico que resulta la relevancia y pertinencia de las tareas. Aunque no se diseñó como estudio comparativo se evidenciaron diferencias entre ambos contextos así como en cada grupo entre sí. Las estrategias de enseñanza aplicadas, sin embargo siguen un patrón bastante similar en el escenario público y el privado.
