English abstract

One of the many challenges fueled by global society has been the permanent (re)conceptualization of the concept of literacy, dictated by a digital (r)evolution that has transformed citizen’s interaction with information. This change has been reflected also in the educational arena, calling for a broad reflection on the appropriate way to respond to such a challenge. Higher education students, particularly because of their specific academic work, need not only select but also to position themselves critically against the increasing flow of information with which they are confronted. Thus, this communication aims to: 1) seek to understand how the students of Social Communication and Advertising and Public Relations perceive the distinct digital literacy practices in which they engage daily; 2) distinguish which uses they more frequently make of Information Technology and Communication (ICT), in the pursuit of their autonomous work, to access the information they need, and how they perceive them as relevant; 3) identify what type of search they perform to carry out academic work and how it reflects their access to information practices. It was considered adequate for this exploratory study a quantitative approach, based on data collected through a questionnaire survey, administered to students in two courses of an Portuguese Polytechnic Institution (Social Communication and Advertising and Public Relations). The results show that despite of frequently navigating on the Internet and perceiving themselves as proficient users of Information Technology and Communication (ICT), this does not mean they will assume a critical attitude to information required in this level of education. This underscores the need for further studies of greater amplitude that can contribute to a better understanding of the reasons that underlie such practices, as well as appropriate forms of intervention.
