English abstract

The research objectives are: to identify the leaders' opinion about leadership; to identify both the skills necessary to be an effective leader in academic libraries and the way librarians in Puerto Rico develop leadership skills. The researchers used and applied The Jigsaw Model which presents the six components that each and every leader should work: A Leader is a visionary, sets an example, understands what motivates each team member, builds supportive relationships, facilitates empowerment and understands the importance of communication. The research participants were directors of the University of Puerto Rico libraries. This study provides guidelines to develop leadership skills. It also, provided data to develop a guide for future leaders in the Information Science field and in the academic libraries context.

Spanish abstract

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo conocer la opinión de líderes en el campo de las ciencias de la información sobre el liderazgo, entender cuáles son las destrezas necesarias para desarrollarse como un líder efectivo en las bibliotecas académicas y la forma en que se desarrollan los líderes en el campo de las ciencias de la información en Puerto Rico. Para este estudio se utiliza el Modelo Jigsaw el cual presenta seis componentes que debe desarrollar el líder: Un líder es visionario, es un ejemplo a seguir, motiva a cada miembro de su equipo, construye relaciones de apoyo, facilita el empoderamiento y comprende la importancia de la comunicación. Los participantes son Directores de las bibliotecas de la Univerisdad de Puerto Rico. Los resultados de este estudio serán de beneficio para los bibliotecarios y especialistas de la información ya que se obtuvieron diversas recomendaciones sobre el liderazgo que servirán de base para desarrollar futuras investigaciones acerca del tema en bibliotecas académicas. Además, se incluyen modelos que servirán de guía para ayudar a desarrollar futuros líderes en el campo de la información en Puerto Rico y en el exterior.
