English abstract

Based on an analysis of the typographic material of Rhegius’ Catechism (Prague, after 6 June 1547), this paper breaks the earlier myth of the beginnings of the Czech printer Jiří Melantrich. The key findings are: a) In Melantrich’s youth (until 1547), it is impossible to prove his work in any printing workshop abroad (Basel, Nuremberg), from which he would have certainly brought to his first Prague workshop at least a few pieces of initials or book décor. Neither does Melantrich mention his stay in a famous metropolis or activity in a renowned printing workshop in any dedication or preface; b) Neither is it possible to prove Melantrich’s supposed stay in Prostějov with Jan Günther, whose typographic material is entirely different from the means used in Rhegius’ Catechism; c) On the other hand, an analysis of the printed letters and the title border leads to the conclusion that Melantrich cooperated with the Catholic printer Bartoloměj Netolický – not after Ferdinand’s ban on printing press (in the autumn of 1547), but already in the summer before the publication of Rhegius’ Catechism. This is clearly proved by an analysis of the typographic means of the Catechism, which belonged to Netolický, to whom they later returned; d) The facts discovered cannot but lead to scepticism about Melantrich’s engagement as a printer in the production of the Bible of 1549, whose only author was Netolický, whereas Melantrich demonstrably appears to be only a co-publisher and a possible co-worker in the role of a hired journeyman. -- Translated by Kateřina Millerová. -- ISBN 978-80-86675-27-5.

Czech abstract

Příspěvek pomocí analýzy typografického materiálu Rhegiova Katechismu (Praha po 6. VI. 1547) bourá dosavadní mýtus počátků českého tiskaře Jiřího Melantricha. Za zásadní zjištění lze považovat, že a) během Melantrichova mládí (do 1547) nelze prokázat pobyt v žádné zahraniční tiskárně (Basilej, Norimberk), z níž by si jistě do své první pražské dílny přinesl alespoň několik kusů iniciál nebo knižního dekoru. O pobytu v nějaké slavné metropoli či v renomované tiskárně se Melantrich příležitostně nezmiňuje ani v žádné dedikaci či předmluvě; b) zároveň nelze ani prokázat dosud předpokládaný Melantrichův pobyt v Prostějově u Jana Günthera, jehož typografický materiál se s prostředky užitými v Rhegiově Katechismu vůbec neshoduje; c) analýzou tiskového písmana a titulní bodrury přicházíme naopak k závěru, že Melantrich se spojil s katolickým tiskařem Bartolomějem Netolickým, a to nikoli až po Ferdinandově zákazu knihtisku (podzim 1547), nýbrž již v létě před vydáním Rhegiova Katechismu. Jednoznačně to dokazuje rozbor typografických prostředků Katechismu, které patřily Netolickému, k němuž se později zase vrátily; d) zjištěná fakta zároveň vedou k nutné skepsi o Melantrichově tiskařském angažmá na výrobě Bible 1549, jejímž jediným původcem byl Netolický, zatímco Melantrich se prokazatelně jeví jen jako spolunakladatel a možný spolupracovník v roli nájemného tovaryše. -- ISBN 978-80-86675-27-5.
