English abstract

Publishing the results of a research group in a scientific article always creates the debate about authorship. The APA considers authors as those who bring real and substantial scientific contribution by participating in revealing the challenge, formulating hypotheses and the experimental design, assisting the statistical analysis and results interpretation and/or by writing a significant part of the text, with a deep knowledge of the subject. This paper is a review of some relevant cases of malpractice related to co-authorship and the order of signature: the controversy over authorship, ghost authorship and undeserved authorship. The aim is to review the literature on the subject and to know the opinion of Spanish Social Sciences editors on malpractice frequency, severity, ease of identification and future trend. An online questionnaire was answered by 81 Spanish editors of academic journals from the fields of Psychology, Communication and Education. . The results show that a previous agreement to define the difference between authors and collaborators during investigation design as well as a good understanding of the different contributions are the factors to consider avoiding future disputes. Spanish Social Sciences editors confirm having more difficulty in identifying cases of undeserved authorship and ghost authorship than in the cases of disputed authorship. They consider undeserved authorship as the most frequent malpractice that will continue to grow in the future although the reasons that motivate this opinion have not been stated.

La publicación de los resultados de investigación colaborativa en formato artículo científico plantea decisiones importantes en la delimitación de la autoría. Se asume la acepción de la American Psychological Association (APA; 1994) que considera autor a quien realiza contribuciones científicas sustanciales en la investigación, participa en el problema, hipótesis y/o formulación del diseño experimental, asiste en el análisis estadístico e interpretación de resultados o escribe una parte significativa del artículo, conoce el tema en profundidad y está al corriente de la publicación. En esta comunicación se realiza una revisión de algunos casos relevantes de mala praxis relacionados con la coautoría y el orden de firma: la disputa de autoría, la autoría fantasma y la autoría inmerecida. El objetivo es revisar la literatura sobre el tema y conocer la opinión de editores de revistas españolas de Ciencias Sociales sobre su frecuencia, gravedad, facilidad de identificación y tendencia a futuro. Se administra un cuestionario on-line que es respondido por 81 editores españoles de revistas académicas de Psicología, Comunicación y Educación. Los resultados revelan que la decisión pactada y consensuada acerca de las implicaciones de los términos autor/colaborador, en la fase de diseño de la investigación junto con la reflexión sobre la envergadura de las aportaciones -aspecto que incluso se puede cuantificar- contribuyen a garantizar la ausencia de conflictividad. Los editores de revistas españolas de Ciencias Sociales tienen más dificultad en identificar los casos de autoría inmerecida y autoría fantasma que los casos de disputa de autoría. Consideran que la autoría inmerecida es la mala praxis más frecuente y que seguirá creciendo en el futuro aunque no se han podido concretar las razones que motivan esta opinión. Se hace necesario realizar un seguimiento de los aspectos éticos en la publicación científica y fomentar el asociacionismo entre editores para conseguir prácticas consensuadas y códigos éticos compartidos.
