English abstract

This work examines the importance of controlled vocabulary for information retrieval, analyzes the disadvantages of pre-coordinated headings, and proposes the use of FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), a subject headings list adapted from the Library of Congress Subject Headings developed by OCLC, as a viable alternative for the assignment of subject headings in institutional repositories.

Spanish abstract

En este trabajo se examina la importancia de la normalización de los encabezamientos de materia para la recuperación de información, se analizan las desventajas de los encabezamientos precoordinados y se propone la utilización de FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), una lista de encabezamientos derivada de los Library of Congress Subject Headings desarrollada por OCLC, como una alternativa viable para asignación de encabezamientos de materia en repositorios de investigación.
