English abstract

On March 31, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States started the implementation of the new cataloging standard, RDA (Resource Description and Access). Also, another libraries around the world like the National Agricultural Library and the National Library of Medicine of the United States, the British Library, the Library and Archives of Canada, the German National Library and the National Library of Australia also began during that year the RDA implementation. Likewise, in Latin America, several libraries began planning and implementation work of RDA. In Mexico, the National Library of Mexico and the Library System of the National Autonomous University of Mexico began implementing RDA. Additionally, library schools began to include in their training programs teaching of this new cataloging standard. In addition to this, the application and use of technology in generating catalogs have begun to impact the shape and characteristics of them. The aforementioned prompted the need to bring together in the Seventh Meeting of Cataloging and Metadata all those librarians involved in the theory and practice of cataloging and metadata to discuss the problems and challenges of research, education and professional practice related to cataloging and metadata, in order to identify possible alternatives to address them successfully. The documents included in this publication will contribute to the increase the literature in this LIS area, thereby supporting the development of research, teaching and practice of information organization, cataloging and metadata in Latin American countries.

El 31 de marzo de 2013, la Biblioteca del Congreso de los Estados Unidos inició la implementación del nuevo estándar de catalogación, las RDA (Resource Description and Access). Asimismo, otras bibliotecas a nivel global como la Biblioteca Nacional de Agricultura y la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de los Estados Unidos, la Biblioteca Británica, la Biblioteca y Archivos de Canadá, la Biblioteca Nacional de Alemania y la Biblioteca Nacional de Australia también iniciaron durante ese año la implementación de RDA. También en América Latina diversas bibliotecas empezaron la planeación y el trabajo de implementación de las RDA. En México, la Biblioteca Nacional de México y el Sistema Bibliotecario de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México iniciaron la implementación de RDA. Adicionalmente, las escuelas de bibliotecología empezaron a incluir en sus programas de formación la enseñanza de este nuevo estándar de catalogación. Aunado a lo anterior, la aplicación de las RDA y el uso de la tecnología en la generación de los catálogos han empezado a impactar la forma y características de éstos. Lo anteriormente mencionado motivó la necesidad de que el VII Encuentro de Catalogación y Metadatos tuviese como objetivo reunir a los involucrados en la teoría y práctica de la catalogación y los metadatos para discutir los problemas y retos actuales de la investigación, la educación y la práctica profesional relacionadas con la catalogación, los catálogos y los metadatos, con el fin de identificar posibles alternativas para enfrentarlos de manera exitosa. Los documentos incluidos en esta publicación contribuirán al incremento de la literatura en esta área de la bibliotecología, apoyando de esa forma el desarrollo de la investigación, la enseñanza y la práctica profesional de la organización de la información, la catalogación y los metadatos en los países de América Latina.
