English abstract

The speed at which Kerala has achieved progress in regard to literacy and library facilities is one that cannot be dreamed by any State in India. The library movement, which was initiated in Kerala at the grassroots level later, got well organized and recognized by government is one of the unique examples of people's movement in world history. The villages in Kerala are best example of how literacy and economic and social development can be influenced and nourished by libraries. The article gives a birds eye view of the life and work of the saintly leader of the movement Sri. P N Panikkar who devoted his life to the great cause.

ഭാരതത്തിലെ മറ്റേതെങ്കിലുമൊരു സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനു് സ്വപ്നം കാണാനാവാത്തതാണു് സാക്ഷരതയിലും ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ സൗകര്യത്തിലും കേരളത്തിലുണ്ടായ പുരോഗതി. താണതലത്തില്‍ നിന്നു് ഗ്രാമീണര്‍ തുടങ്ങി വളര്‍ത്തി വികസിപ്പിച്ചു് സംഘടിതമായി പിന്നെ ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ അംഗീകാരം നേടിയെടുക്കുകയും ലോകശ്രദ്ധയാകര്‍ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഒന്നാണു് കേരളത്തിലെ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ പ്രസ്ഥാനം. ഒരു ജനതയുടെ സംസ്കാരവും സാക്ഷരതയും സാമ്പത്തിക സാമൂഹ്യവികസനവും ഒക്കെ ഗ്രന്ഥശാലകളാല്‍ എങ്ങനെ സ്വാധീനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്നതിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങളാണു് കേരളത്തിലെ ഗ്രാമങ്ങള്‍. ഗ്രന്ഥശാലാ സാക്ഷരതാ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ക്കു വേണ്ടി ഒരു പുരുഷായുസ്സു മുഴുവന്‍ യത്‌നിച്ച പി എന്‍ പണിക്കരുടെ സംഭവബഹുലമായ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ലേഖനം.
