English abstract

The paper proposes some thoughts on the limitations of information discovery, as a way to search and discover information and resources mainly implemented through so-called web-scale discovery services which do not have the accuracy of information retrieval. Given the increasing importance of integrating among research methodologies those calibrated on the Web, a good acceptance of new systems alongside more traditional ones is the task of an appropriate and updated method of disseminating information literacy, developing a system of education to the use and evaluation of all tools and criteria for information retrieval and information discovery. Although through proper implementation and careful use web-scale discovery service are a useful tool to promote and explain in libraries, at the moment they appear to be limited to be basic tools for a first search and discovery of resources. Each library will determine the potentials and usefulness of the new tools related to traditional ones, explaining to users the specific differences that make all the tools remain distinct and organized for different purposes.

Italian abstract

L’articolo propone alcune riflessioni sui limiti dell’information discovery, in quanto modalità di ricerca e scoperta dell’informazione e delle risorse attuata principalmente tramite i sistemi detti web-scale discovery service, che non hanno il rigore dell’information retrieval. Data la crescente importanza di integrare tra le metodologie di ricerca quelle tarate sullo spazio del Web, è compito di un adeguato e aggiornato metodo di diffusione dell’information literacy un valido accoglimento dei nuovi sistemi accanto a quelli più tradizionali, sviluppando un sistema di educazione delle persone all’uso e alla valutazione di tutti gli strumenti e i criteri di information retrieval e information discovery. Anche se un’adeguata implementazione e un attento impiego fanno dei web-scale discovery service un utile strumento da promuovere e spiegare nelle biblioteche, essi sembrano restare limitati, almeno al momento, all’essere strumenti di base per una prima ricerca e scoperta delle risorse disponibili. Ogni biblioteca dovrà stabilire le potenzialità e l’utilità dei nuovi strumenti in rapporto a quelli tradizionali, spiegando agli utenti le specifiche differenze che fanno restare tutti gli strumenti distinti e organizzati per scopi differenti.
