English abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify the scientific journals asked by users, not available in Spanish libraries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed article applications processed during the years 2012 and 2013 (a period of important budget cuts in many libraries) by the interlending services of four hospitals of the Spanish region Castilla-La Mancha, two of them university hospitals. We identified those article that could not be served through national interlibrary loan, excluding from the sample those that were not served for the following reasons: Erroneous citation or not enough data, user cancellations because of cost or journal being binded at the time of request. RESULTS: Out of a total of 19.159 requests received from our users, we identified 1.033 requests that could not be served, corresponding to 665 journal titles. Problems encountered include: • Old references not covered by current collections • References in rare languages ​​(Chinese, Japanese ...), Only a small core of journals had a certain demand level (there were only 2 with with more that 10 requests). Among them, some titles have been identified that have been rejected by some library and obtained otherwise, usually using the lists of searches. CONCLUSIONS • We believe that the method could be extended to other libraries and would serve to identify certain gaps in our collections that could be solved cooperatively. • Given the dispersion of the titles requested, it could be more advantageous to purchase articles on demand than to subscribe to journals, but we do not have administrative mechanisms that assure us a speedy purchase. • Further updating of collective catalogs is required. • We detected some degree of "variation in practice" that influences the results. • Some requests indicated that users need some training.

OBJETIVO: Identificar las revistas científicas, demandadas por los usuarios, no disponibles en bibliotecas españolas. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se analizan las solicitudes tramitadas durante los años 2012 y 2013 (período de importantes recortes en el presupuesto de muchas bibliotecas), por los servicios de obtención de documentos de cuatro hospitales de Castilla-La Mancha, dos de ellos universitarios. Se identifican las que no pudieron servirse a través de préstamo interbibliotecario nacional, excluyendo de la muestra las que no se sirvieron por los siguientes motivos: citas erróneas o con datos insuficientes, renuncia del usuario por suponer coste para él, o encontrarse en encuadernación en el momento de la solicitud. RESULTADOS: De un total de 19.159 peticiones recibidas de nuestros usuarios, se identifican 1.033 rechazadas que corresponden a 665 títulos. Se identifican tres problemas distintos: • Referencias antiguas: peticiones no atendidas que corresponden con títulos actualmente presentes en nuestras bibliotecas pero con colecciones “jóvenes”, • Referencias en idiomas poco frecuentes (chino, japonés…), • Un pequeño núcleo de revistas con cierta demanda (sólo hay 2 con más de 10 solicitudes). Entre ellas, se identifican algunos títulos que han sido rechazados en alguna biblioteca y conseguidos de otra forma, generalmente recurriendo a las listas de búsquedas. CONCLUSIONES: • Consideramos que el método podría ampliarse a otras bibliotecas y serviría para identificar determinadas lagunas en nuestras colecciones que podrían subsanarse de forma cooperativa. • Dada la dispersión de los títulos solicitados, podría interesar más la compra de artículos a demanda que la suscripción a las revistas, pero no disponemos de mecanismos administrativos que nos aseguren la compra ágil. • Se precisa una mayor actualización de los catálogos colectivos. • Detectamos cierto grado de “variación en la práctica” que influye en los resultados. • Determinadas peticiones apuntan a necesidad de mayor formación de algunos usuarios.
