English abstract

The article examines Casamassima's idea of the library as well as his analysis of the Italian libraries system. Casamassima considers the library a complex organism, with regards to its history and functions, which needs a conscious management and a careful development policy. The last one takes charge of the diffusion of current culture, and of the past culture preservation. The preservation aspect, instead of having a retrograde approach, should try to harmonize with the propositive and pedagogical aspects of the library itself. With regards to the Italian library System, Casamassima at first asked for increasing personnel and funds in order to give back credibility to the libraries; then he planned some structural reform to improve the National library of Florence (BNCF) and Italian libraries in general, with a closer collaboration between libraries and preservation institutes in order to train conscious and specialized personnel.
