English abstract

Peer review is considered one of the fundamental pillars of the scientific communication process. It has spread to all scientific fields, including the social sciences and humanities, and journals that do not include the process are barely regarded as scientific. Despite this, the process has been criticized for its limitations and the inconsistent manner in which it is applied. The objective of the chapter is, first and foremost, to describe the characteristics and stages of the peer review process and the actors involved, and, secondly, to analyse its main constraints and describe the alternatives that are therefore being considered.

La revision por pares está considerada como uno de los pilares fundamentales del proceso de comunicación científica, su incorporación está extendida a todas las áreas científicas, incluyendo las ciencias sociales y humanidades y difícilmente una revista que no lo incorpora se considera científica. Pese a ello, este proceso no está exento de críticas a sus limitaciones ni tampoco su modo de aplicación es uniforme. El objetivo del capítulo es, en primer lugar, describir las características, actores y las etapas de la revisión por pares y, en segundo lugar, analizar sus principales limitaciones y describir las alternativas que, como consecuencia, se plantean.
