English abstract

An analysis of scientific activity in Puerto Rico is presented, through the bibliometric characterization of the research carried out at the University of Puerto Rico, based on indicators of productivity, collaboration, visibility and impact, and research topics. The analysis is carried out from a database of own creation that collects Web of Science data subjected to an exhaustive normalization. The data corresponding to the aforementioned indicators are analyzed. The results allow to present a synoptic picture about the scientific work in the University of Puerto Rico, the data show the leadership of this institution supported by its production, the level of scientific collaboration and the visibility and impact of said production. The areas of research with the greatest potential are identified, according to the activity index, and the potential participation of this institution in the economic development of Puerto Rico is highlighted.

Spanish abstract

Se presenta un análisis de la actividad científica en Puerto Rico, mediante la caracterización bibliométrica de la investigación que se realiza en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, basado en indicadores de productividad, colaboración, visibilidad e impacto y temáticas de la investigación. El análisis se realiza a partir de una base de datos de creación propia que recoge datos de Web of Science sometidos a una normalización exhaustiva. Se analizan los datos correspondientes a los indicadores antes mencionados. Los resultados permiten presentar un cuadro sinóptico sobre el quehacer científico en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, que evidencia el protagonismo de esta institución dada su producción, el nivel de la colaboración científica y la visibilidad e impacto de dicha producción. Se identifican las áreas de investigación con mayor potencial, de acuerdo con el índice de actividad, y se destaca la importancia de esta institución en el desarrollo económico de Puerto Rico.
