English abstract

Identifiers, like metadata, serve many different purposes. They are of course very useful for searching, since they may provide a unique access key to the identified resource. Selling electronic and even traditional books and journals is very dependent in identifiers; if a book purchase order or ILL request contains ISBN, it is much easier to deliver the correct product. Identifiers are also good for libraries’ housekeeping functions, such as deleting duplicate records from union catalogues. Identifiers are also essential for resolution services, systems which provide persistent linking between references and the resources themselves. This article provides an overview of the present status and future challenges in identifying electronic resources, and a European view – or perhaps Finnish - on these issues. As of this writing (November 2001) there are still many open issues, and one of my aims to increase awareness of these. It is important to understand that the in the foreseeable future the way we identify resources in general and electronic resources in particular will change in a fundamental way, and this will have a major impact on our systems and the staff.

Gli identificatori, come i metadati, servono a molti e diversi scopi. Sono naturalmente molto utili per la ricerca, poiché possono fornire una chiave unica di accesso alla risorsa per loro mezzo identificata. L’attività di vendere libri e periodici in formato elettronico e anche in formato tradizionale dipende molto dagli identificatori; se un ordine per l’acquisto di un libro o una richiesta di ILL contiene un ISBN, è molto più facile recapitare il prodotto giusto. Gli identificatori sono anche adatti per funzioni di manutenzione delle biblioteche, come la cancellazione dei duplicati dai cataloghi collettivi. Gli identificatori sono inoltre essenziali per i servizi di risoluzione (resolution services), sistemi che forniscono legami persistenti tra i riferimenti e le risorse stesse. Questo articolo fornisce una visione d’insieme dello stato presente e delle sfide future nell’identificazione delle risorse elettroniche, e una visione europea – o forse finlandese – su queste problematiche. Alla data di questo scritto (novembre 2001) ci sono ancora molte questioni aperte, e una delle mie aspirazioni è quella di incrementare la consapevolezza che abbiamo di esse. E’ importante capire che nell'immediato futuro il modo con il quale identificheremo le risorse in generale e quelle elettroniche in particolare cambierà in modo sostanziale, e questo avrà un impatto considerevole sui nostri sistemi e sullo staff.
