English abstract

The latest data on the scarce use of Spanish libraries question the usefulness of this service in the everyday life of citizens. At the same time, a movement within Library Science and Documentation that speaks, for example, of the social, participatory or common good library, seeks to expand the civic space it occupies. This paper focuses on the implications of the latest Spanish research on information users for this purpose. First, the data reveal the scarce participation of professionals in this research. Second, there is an abundance of research focusing on the evaluation of information units, but little research aimed at obtaining data for planning purposes. Third, there is more interest in the user in the work environment than in the information needs of users in their daily lives. Finally, there has been an increase in methodological complexity, but this does not lead to an improvement in the explicit practical implications for the management of information units. All this leads to reflect on the need for researchers and professionals to become more involved in the knowledge of the behaviour, habits and information needs of users if the objective is a library that balances the potential social value perceived by professionals and researchers with the value derived from its use and, therefore, its usefulness for the citizen.

Spanish abstract

Los últimos datos sobre el escaso uso de las bibliotecas españolas cuestionan la utilidad de este servicio en la cotidianidad ciudadana. Paralelamente, un movimiento dentro de la Biblioteconomía y Documentación que habla de la biblioteca social, participativa o del bien común, busca ampliar el espacio ciudadano que ésta ocupa. Este trabajo se centra en las implicaciones que para este propósito tienen las últimas investigaciones españolas sobre usuarios de la información. Primero, los datos revelan la escasa participación de los profesionales en estas investigaciones. Segundo, abundan aquellas que se centran en la evaluación de unidades de información, pero escasean las dirigidas a obtener datos para su planificación. Tercero, hay más interés por el usuario en el entorno laboral que por las necesidades de información de los usuarios en su vida cotidiana. Finalmente, ha aumentado la complejidad metodológica, pero eso no redunda en la mejora de las implicaciones prácticas explicitas para la gestión de unidades de información. Todo ello lleva a reflexionar sobre la necesidad de que investigadores y profesionales se impliquen más en el conocimiento del comportamiento, hábitos y necesidades de información de los usuarios si el objetivo es una biblioteca que equilibre el potencial valor social percibido por profesionales e investigadores con el valor derivado de su uso y, por lo tanto, de su utilidad para el ciudadano.
