English abstract

Luis Leon Masson is a really paradoxical case: How is it possible that a photographer, at the beginning of photography in Spain, whose production we estimate in some 800 works, has remained practically hidden until today? We know that he worked between 1858 and 1880, mainly in Seville, and that while maintaining a traditional studio, supported by his wife Lorenza Simonin, he made a very extensive catalog of topographic photography, especially in Seville, but also with a notable group dedicated to the main Andalusian capitals, Madrid and some of northern Spain.

El desconocimiento de la vida y obra de Luis Masson, un fotógrafo francés que trabajó en los inicios de la fotografía en España, cuya producción estimamos en unas 800 obras, es ciertamente paradójico. Desarrolló su colección entre 1858 y 1880, principalmente en Sevilla, y que aun manteniendo un estudio tradicional, apoyado por su esposa Lorenza Simonin, realizó un amplísimo catálogo de fotografía topográfica sobre todo sevillana, pero también con un notable grupo dedicado a las principales capitales andaluzas: Granada, Córdoba, Cádiz y Málaga, además de otras localidades como Gibraltar, Jerez o Alcalá de Guadaíra. También Madrid, Toledo y otras ciudades castellanas.
