English abstract

The evolution of the architecture of the Spanish university library from the invention of the printing press to the present day is briefly reviewed. It reflects on the role of library architecture in post-industrial society, which is both a strong determining factor and a great opportunity, to the extent that the success of the institution depends in part on it: giving a satisfactory response to the demands and expectations of the university community, and of society in general. Defining today what those needs and expectations are, beyond mere custody of the collections or mere access to information, is a prior, crucial and currently very open question in order to be able to design the library buildings of the future.
