English abstract

The main objective of the study was to investigate how social networking sites(SNS) have shaped the reading habits of the degree college students in the Srinagar district of Kashmir, J&K, (India). Data were collected with the aid of a welldesigned and structured questionnaire using Google forms. The results reveal that students use social networking sites for both academic and non-academic purposes. It was revealed that the majority of the students in all disciplines used social networking sites for exchanging reading material, communicating with teachers and classmates, obtaining information, and reading newspapers and magazines. The majority of the students also agree or strongly agree that social networking sites help in improving reading skills, understanding text, and developing book reading, newspaper reading, and critical reading. However, students have been cautioned to make judicial use of social networking sites.
