English abstract

The h-index and how it is calculated are explained. The article begins with a short biographical note of its inventor Jorge E. Hirsh, nuclear physicist and pacifist. The characteristics of the h-index and the criticisms it has received are discussed. Other derived indices (m, i, g)are presented. A brief mention is made of the Publish or Perish program.

Se explica el índice h y cómo se calcula. El artículo se inicia con una corta nota biográfica de su inventor Jorge E. Hirsh, físico nuclear y pacifista. Se comentam las caracterísicas del índice h y las críticas que ha recibido. Se presentan otros índices derivados (m, i, g).Se hace una breve mención al programa Publish or Perish.
