English abstract
The article reflects on the current scientific publishing landscape, focusing on diamond open access journals—those that do not charge article processing fees (APCs). Drawing on the study by Bosman et al. (2021), the author highlights the global growth and distribution of diamond journals, noting that Latin America, and particularly Argentina, has a strong tradition in this model, especially within the social sciences and humanities. While diamond journals initially grew in parallel with APC-based journals, the latter have seen rapid expansion since 2017, largely driven by large commercial publishers. The author argues that diamond journals offer a viable alternative to commercial publishing models, but face important challenges such as sustainability, editorial professionalization, and improving content visibility and dissemination. She raises critical questions: Is the APC model truly beneficial for researchers in Latin America? What would happen if the resources currently used to pay APCs were redirected to support national diamond journals? The article invites reflection on the kind of science being promoted and funded in the region, emphasizing the need for inclusive, sustainable publishing models.

El artículo reflexiona sobre el modelo de publicación científica en acceso abierto, en particular sobre las llamadas revistas diamante, que no cobran cargos por procesar artículos (APC). A partir del estudio de Bosman et al. (2021), se describe la evolución y distribución global de estas revistas, destacando que América Latina, y especialmente Argentina, tiene una fuerte tradición en este modelo editorial, principalmente en las áreas de ciencias sociales y humanidades. Se contrasta el crecimiento estancado de las revistas diamante con la expansión de las que cobran APC, generalmente gestionadas por grandes editoriales comerciales. Se plantea que las revistas diamante representan una alternativa viable frente al modelo comercial, pero enfrentan desafíos significativos como la sustentabilidad, la profesionalización del rol editorial y la mejora en la visibilidad y circulación de los contenidos. Se propone repensar qué modelos de financiamiento son más adecuados para el contexto latinoamericano y plantea interrogantes clave: ¿es más beneficioso el modelo APC? ¿Qué pasaría si se invirtieran más recursos en fortalecer las revistas diamante nacionales? Así, el artículo invita a debatir sobre qué tipo de ciencia se promueve y financia en la región.
