English abstract
Manuel Gálvez (1882-1962) was a writer recognized by the public in the first half of the 20th century and one of the founding members of the Argentine Academy of Letters. Among his best sellers were the novels Nacha Regules and La maestra normal, which were made into films. Although his works had multiple reprints, at the end of his life he feared that he would be remembered only for his role as a writer and not for what he believed was one of his main achievements: editing young and Latin American authors. In writing his memoirs, in the last chapter of his Recuerdos de la vida literaria, as if he was stepping away from himself to distance himself in the face of death, he wrote “Don Manuel has entered true old age”. Gálvez was about to turn eighty years old and would inexorably have to “undertake the journey from which one does not return” or he was about to “go and get a ticket” (Gálvez, 2003: 763). The concern to make his story known and the search for a publishing house was a strategy to build his legacy. Gálvez knew the book world since the first decades of the 20th century but at the end of his life he felt relegated. Wanting to publish the four volumes of Recuerdos de la vida literaria was not an easy task despite being the founder of the imprint that published Horacio Quiroga's Cuentos de amor locura y muerte in book format for the first time in 1917.

Manuel Gálvez (1882-1962) fue un escritor reconocido por el público en la primera mitad del siglo XX y uno de los miembros fundadores de la Academia Argentina de Letras. Entre sus mayores éxitos de ventas se destacaron las novelas Nacha Regules y La maestra normal que fueron llevadas al cine. Si bien sus obras tuvieron múltiples reimpresiones, al final de su vida temía que fuera recordado solo por su rol como escritor y no por lo que creía que fue uno de sus principales logros: editar a autores jóvenes y americanos. Al redactar sus memorias, en el último capítulo de sus Recuerdos de la vida literaria, como si se alejara de sí para tomar distancia frente a la muerte, escribió “Don Manuel ha entrado en la auténtica vejez”. Gálvez estaba por cumplir ochenta años y tendría inexorablemente que “emprender el viaje del que no se vuelve” o estaba próximo a “ir sacando pasaje” (Gálvez, 2003: 763). La preocupación por dar conocer su historia y la búsqueda de una editorial fue una estrategia para construir su legado. Gálvez conocía el mundo del libro desde las primeras décadas del siglo XX pero al final de su vida se sentía relegado. Querer publicar los cuatro tomos de Recuerdos de la vida literaria no era una tarea sencilla a pesar de ser el fundador del sello que publicó en 1917 por primera vez en formato de libro los Cuentos de amor locura y muerte de Horacio Quiroga.
