English abstract

The translation of the text "Guidelines for Library and Information Services to Older Adults" of the Library Services to an Aging Population Committee of the Management and User Services Section of the Reference and User Services Association of the American Library Association into Greek was carried out following the granting of the necessary permission by the American Library Association (ALA) to the Association of Greek Librarians and Information Scientists (AGLIS). During its second period of operation in 2022, the AGLIS Lifelong Learning Committee included the translation of guidelines, standards, and other library-related documents from international organizations and Library Committees among its activities, with the ultimate goal of improving the daily work of Greek librarians. It is worth noting that although, back in 2008, the elderly person—as perceived by the original text's authors—was defined as someone aged 55 and over, today, according to the United Nations, “elderly” refers to individuals over the age of 60, or even 65 in some cases. The age of 65 is generally considered the threshold of old age, as during this life stage the rates of illness and mortality begin to show a significant increase compared to previous years. Based on the above, the term “older adults” (literally “third age”) was used in the translation, as it has become synonymous with aging and, being a broad term, encompasses a wide range of age groups (Antoniadou, Zygouris, and Tsolaki, 2017). We hope this guide will contribute to developing new services and improving existing ones in our Libraries for the older adult public.

Η μετάφραση του κειμένου στα ελληνικά πραγματοποιήθηκε κατόπιν χορήγησης της απαραίτητης άδειας από την American Library Association (ALA) στην Ένωση Ελλήνων Βιβλιοθηκονόμων και Επιστημόνων της Πληροφορίας (ΕΕΒΕΠ). Η Επιτροπή Δια Βίου Μάθησης (ΕΔΒΙΜ) της ΕΕΒΕΠ στη 2η θητεία λειτουργίας της το 2022 συμπεριέλαβε τις μεταφράσεις οδηγιών, προτύπων και λοιπών βιβλιοθηκονομικών κειμένων διεθνών οργανώσεων και Επιτροπών Βιβλιοθηκών στις δραστηριότητές της1, με τελικό σκοπό τη βελτίωση της καθημερινής εργασίας των Ελλήνων βιβλιοθηκονόμων. Σημειώνουμε ότι ενώ το 2008 για τους συναδέλφους - συγγραφείς του αρχικού κειμένου ο ηλικιωμένος άνθρωπος ήταν αυτός που είχε ηλικία 55 ετών, σήμερα, σύμφωνα με τον Οργανισμό Ηνωμένων Εθνών “ηλικιωμένα είναι τα άτομα που έχουν περάσει τα 60 έτη ή ακόμα και τα 65 σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις. Η ηλικία των 65 ετών ορίζεται γενικά ως το κατώφλι της τρίτης ηλικίας, δεδομένου ότι σε αυτήν την περίοδο της ζωής τα ποσοστά ασθένειας και θανάτου αρχίζουν να παρουσιάζουν μια αξιοσημείωτη αύξηση σε σχέση με αυτά των προηγούμενων ετών.” Με βάση τα παραπάνω δεδομένα κατά τη μετάφραση του κειμένου χρησιμοποιήθηκε ο όρος “τρίτη ηλικία” καθώς έχει ταυτιστεί με το γήρας, και ως πολύ γενικός όρος καλύπτει με το εύρος του πολλές ηλικιακές ομάδες (Αντωνιάδου, Ζυγούρης και Τσολάκη, 2017). Ευελπιστούμε ότι ο παρών οδηγός θα συμβάλλει στην ανάπτυξη νέων και στην βελτίωση των ήδη παρεχόμενων υπηρεσιών στις Βιβλιοθήκες μας για το κοινό τρίτης ηλικίας.
