English abstract

In this first installment of the School of Editors section, I discuss different reasons that can motivate the launch of a new scientific journal. I start by questioning: Why do we want to establish a new journal? Its response implies realizing that there can be both correct and incorrect reasons for creating a new journal. If it is an institutional journal, the limited understanding that some individuals have about what a scientific journal is and what it entails can work against such a project, potentially dooming it to failure. Additionally, I present the results of a literature review, primarily from sources that address the publication of 28 specific journals. Such results allow discussing the various issues that make it difficult to create journals, the reasons why we can create a new scientific journal, and, as a conclusion, the initial steps to launch a new journal.
