English abstract
Generative artificial intelligence is reshaping the ways in which information is accessed, produced, and evaluated, while simultaneously challenging the traditional role of librarianship. This paper argues that the emergence of generative AI constitutes a critical turning point and a unique opportunity for the field to redefine and strengthen its professional identity. Historically, librarianship has identified major technological transformations but has often failed to occupy a central role within them. In the context of AI, this pattern can no longer be sustained. Large language models produce fluent and persuasive texts regardless of their factual accuracy, frequently generating hallucinations, biases, and unverifiable content. As a result, the distinction between reliable and fabricated information becomes increasingly difficult for users to detect. In this scenario, mediation is no longer optional but essential. Librarians are uniquely equipped to respond to this challenge through their expertise in information literacy, critical evaluation of sources, and contextualization of information. The paper highlights the urgent need to rethink information literacy in AI-mediated environments, emphasizing risks such as the erosion of critical thinking, the normalization of unverified content, and the reproduction of structural biases embedded in training data. It also examines the transformation of core professional practices, including reference services, user education, and institutional support, as well as the need for continuous professional development and curricular updates in library education. Rather than diminishing the relevance of librarianship, generative AI reinforces its social and epistemic role. The profession is called to move beyond a model centered on access to information and to assume a more active position as a critical mediator, educator, and guarantor of trustworthy knowledge in an increasingly automated information ecosystem.
