English abstract

This article examines the impact of artificial intelligence on contemporary library practices, arguing that the current shift is not merely technological but epistemological and professional. As information production accelerates and abundance replaces scarcity, libraries face a redefinition of their core function: from providing access to exercising critical selection, mediation, and contextualization. The paper questions the growing assumption that algorithmic systems can replace human judgment in evaluating, organizing, and recommending information. It proposes that bibliotecarian expertise—understood as a situated, ethical, and interpretive practice—remains essential in navigating an increasingly saturated and uneven informational ecosystem. From a Latin American perspective, the article emphasizes that AI adoption must be critically framed within local conditions of inequality, digital divides, and diverse educational trajectories. Rather than rejecting technology, it advocates for subordinating artificial intelligence to professional criteria, reaffirming libraries as spaces of reflection, pause, and responsible knowledge circulation in the algorithmic age.

Este artículo examina el impacto de la inteligencia artificial en las prácticas bibliotecarias contemporáneas, sosteniendo que el cambio en curso no es solo tecnológico, sino también epistemológico y profesional. En un contexto donde la abundancia de información reemplaza a la escasez, las bibliotecas enfrentan una redefinición de su función central: de garantizar el acceso a ejercer la selección crítica, la mediación y la contextualización. El trabajo cuestiona la creciente idea de que los sistemas algorítmicos pueden sustituir el juicio humano en la evaluación, organización y recomendación de contenidos. Se propone que el criterio bibliotecario —entendido como una práctica situada, ética e interpretativa— sigue siendo fundamental para intervenir en un ecosistema informativo saturado y desigual. Desde una perspectiva latinoamericana, se enfatiza que la adopción de la inteligencia artificial debe inscribirse en condiciones locales atravesadas por desigualdades sociales, brechas digitales y trayectorias educativas diversas. Más que rechazar la tecnología, se plantea la necesidad de subordinarla al criterio profesional, reafirmando a las bibliotecas como espacios de reflexión, pausa y circulación responsable del conocimiento en la era algorítmica.
