English abstract

In May 2026, the European Commission, together with Member States and the European Research Area (ERA) Forum, released the third edition of the "Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research". This paper analyzes this innovative, dynamic, and participatory governance tool, designed to evolve continuously in step with rapid technological advancements. The article examines the ethical and practical implications of integrating generative AI into scientific production. It focuses on key issues such as methodological transparency, the strict exclusion of AI from scientific co-authorship, the mitigation of cognitive biases (including prompt bias and sycophancy behavior), and the significant risks to intellectual property and data security posed by commercial platforms. Finally, the paper highlights the strategic role of universities and funding agencies in fostering a culture of responsibility that safeguards the primacy of human critical judgment, aligning scientific research practices with the risk-based framework established by the European AI Act.

Nel maggio 2026, l'Unione Europea ha pubblicato la terza edizione delle "Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research", elaborate dalla Commissione Europea in sinergia con gli Stati membri e il Forum dello Spazio Europeo della Ricerca (ERA). Il presente contributo analizza questo innovativo strumento di governance adattiva e dinamica, concepito per evolvere in modo partecipativo insieme alle tecnologie emergenti. L'articolo esamina le implicazioni etiche e pratiche dell'adozione dell'intelligenza artificiale generativa nella produzione scientifica, soffermandosi su aspetti cruciali quali la trasparenza metodologica, l'esclusione dell'AI dalla paternità scientifica (co-authorship), la gestione dei bias cognitivi (come il prompt bias e il sycophancy behavior) e i severi rischi per la proprietà intellettuale e la sicurezza dei dati legati all'uso di piattaforme commerciali. Infine, viene evidenziato il ruolo strategico delle università e degli enti finanziatori nel promuovere una cultura della responsabilità che preservi la centralità del giudizio critico umano, in piena coerenza con l'approccio basato sul rischio delineato dall'AI Act europeo.
