English abstract

This paper analyzes the key findings of the landmark "AI Index Report 2026" published by Stanford University, which depicts a global landscape where artificial intelligence has transitioned into a foundational "operating system" for cognitive, educational, and productive processes. The article explores the critical divide between the private sector—now developing over 90% of advanced frontier models—and academic research, which struggles with prohibitive infrastructure costs, thereby threatening its traditional neutrality and curiosity-driven inquiry. Furthermore, the author addresses key challenges highlighted in the Stanford report, including the systemic opacity of proprietary models (contrasting with EU transparency regulations), persistent socio-economic and racial barriers limiting access to advanced computing education, and the broader ethical implications of algorithmic pervasiveness in contemporary society.

Il presente contributo esamina i dati salienti del prestigioso "AI Index Report 2026" pubblicato dalla Stanford University, che fotografa una realtà in cui l'intelligenza artificiale è ormai divenuta parte integrante e strutturale dei processi cognitivi, formativi e produttivi globali. L'articolo approfondisce il divario critico tra il settore privato – responsabile dello sviluppo di oltre il 90% dei modelli di frontiera – e la ricerca universitaria, penalizzata dagli insostenibili costi infrastrutturali e minacciata nella sua storica neutralità e vocazione di base (curiosity-driven). Vengono inoltre analizzati i nodi cruciali evidenziati dal rapporto, tra cui i rischi di opacità dei modelli proprietari in antitesi con i requisiti di trasparenza dell'Unione Europea, la persistenza di barriere socio-economiche nell'accesso alla formazione avanzata e le implicazioni etiche legate alla pervasività delle tecnologie algoritmiche nella società contemporanea.
