English abstract

This paper addresses the growing and alarming risk of digital obsolescence and the permanent disappearance of a significant portion of contemporary scholarly literature from the internet. The article explores the phenomenon of hyperlink degradation (link rot) and the limits of persistent identifiers (such as DOIs) when they lack support from active preservation infrastructures. The author analyzes the critical role of trusted digital repositories and collaborative networks (such as CLOCKSS, Portico, and national digital legal deposit systems). Ultimately, the paper highlights the structural vulnerabilities of a fragmented publishing ecosystem, where the cessation of small publishers and the lack of robust long-term archiving policies threaten to create an irreversible gap in the collective historical memory of global science.

Italian abstract

Il presente contributo esamina il crescente e allarmante rischio di obsolescenza e scomparsa definitiva dalla rete internet di una quota significativa della letteratura scientifica contemporanea. L'articolo approfondisce il fenomeno del degrado dei collegamenti ipertestuali (link rot) e l'inefficacia dei sistemi di identificazione univoca (come i DOI) qualora non supportati da infrastrutture di conservazione attiva. L'autrice analizza il ruolo critico svolto dai depositi digitali centralizzati e cooperativi (quali CLOCKSS, Portico e i sistemi di deposito legale nazionale) e denuncia i limiti strutturali di un ecosistema editoriale frammentato, in cui la chiusura di piccoli editori o l'assenza di politiche di archiviazione a lungo termine minaccia di produrre un vuoto documentario incolmabile nella memoria storica della scienza globale.
