English abstract

This paper commemorates Enrico Catellani, an eminent jurist and professor of international law at the University of Padua, in observance of the Day of Remembrance. Through a detailed historical and biographical reconstruction, the article traces Catellani's brilliant academic career and the subsequent tragic purge he suffered in 1938 following the enactment of the fascist Racial Laws, which led to his expulsion from teaching and social isolation until his death. The author reflects on the historical responsibility of scientific and cultural institutions when facing totalitarianism, emphasizing the vital role of preserving biographical and documentary memory to reaffirm the values of democracy, equality, and academic freedom within contemporary scholarly communities.

Il presente contributo commemora la figura di Enrico Catellani, insigne giurista e docente di diritto internazionale presso l'Università di Padova, in occasione delle celebrazioni del Giorno della Memoria. Attraverso una dettagliata ricostruzione storica e biografica, l'articolo ripercorre la brillante carriera accademica di Catellani e la successiva, drammatica epurazione subita nel 1938 a seguito dell'applicazione delle leggi razziali fasciste, che ne determinarono l'espulsione dall'insegnamento e l'isolamento sociale fino alla tragica scomparsa. L'autrice riflette sulla responsabilità storica delle istituzioni culturali e scientifiche di fronte ai totalitarismi, sottolineando l'importanza della conservazione della memoria biografica e documentaria per riaffermare i valori di democrazia, uguaglianza e libertà intellettuale all'interno delle moderne comunità della conoscenza.
