English abstract

This paper explores the celebrated and enduring tradition of the oselle minted by the University of Padua—exquisite commemorative medals created by the institution to mark moments of significant historical and academic importance. Tracing the historical roots of this practice, directly inherited from the ancient numismatic custom of the Republic of Venice, the article examines the profound artistic, iconographic, and institutional value of these custom-designed artifacts. The author analyzes their rich symbolic language, which blends the celebration of scientific freedom with tributes to leading figures of Paduan culture and science. Ultimately, the paper highlights the critical role of these coins as key elements in preserving, conveying, and promoting the historical memory and cultural identity of the University within the global academic community.

Il presente contributo illustra la celebre e duratura tradizione delle oselle dell'Università di Padova, preziose medaglie commemorative coniate dall'Ateneo per celebrare eventi di eccezionale rilievo storico e accademico. Ripercorrendo le radici storiche di questa usanza, ereditata direttamente dall'antica prassi numismatica della Repubblica di Venezia, l'articolo esamina il profondo valore artistico, iconografico e istituzionale di questi manufatti d'autore. L'autrice ne analizza il ricco linguaggio simbolico, che intreccia la celebrazione della libertà scientifica con l'omaggio alle figure più illustri della cultura e della scienza patavina. Il saggio evidenzia infine il ruolo di tali coniazioni come elementi cardine per la preservazione, la trasmissione e la valorizzazione della memoria storica e dell'identità culturale dell'Ateneo nel panorama internazionale.
