English abstract

A recent debate in the Nature magazine has again talk about the subject of the relevance of the Impact Factor. This article definesif this point is a valid measurement in the scientific evaluation. It exposes some of the problems that the IF faces and analyzes some of the problems derived from their use and manipulation. It concludes indicating that the IF does not have to be used like the only measurement in the evaluation of the scientific activity but that must be complemented with other indicators to mainly measure correctly the scientific activity in zones as Latin America.

Un reciente debate en la revista Nature ha puesto nuevamente como punto de discusión el tema de la relevancia del Factor de Impacto (FI). Este artículo trata de definir hasta que punto este indicador es un medida válida en la evaluación científica. Expone algunos de los problemas que enfrenta el FI y analiza algunos de los problemas derivados de su mal uso y manipulación. Concluye señalando que el FI no debe ser usado como la única medida en la evaluación de la actividad científica sino que debe ser complementado con otros indicadores para medir correctamente la actividad científica sobre todo en zonas como América Latina.
