English abstract

ANTECEDENTS: The handy search of controlled or aleatory clinical trials is a determining factor to carry out systematic reviews which content depends, to a great extent, on its use. The accomplishment of this review is an iniciative developed by the Cochrane Collaboration aimed at providing high quality information to health care professionals. OBJECTIVES: The identification of clinical trials published by biomedical Cuban journals. METHODS: A total number of 1618 articles in 27 Cuban medical journals were handy reviewed. Each research was examined using the requirements established by the Collaboration for clinical trials identification. An automatized search in Medline, Cumed and other databases available at Infomed website was carry out as a support for this research. Finally, a database was created to show the bibliographic references of selected research. RESULTS: 75 works that fullfilled the inclusion criteria were identified. The handy search allowed the identification of 61 (81,33%) from 75 articles found in the review. The journal "Biotecnología Aplicada", previously titled "Interferón y Biotecnología", was the most productive with 34 researches, 45,33% of total. The total number of reviewed articles in the research period, 1999-2002, amounted 6 351, with 168 identified trials. They accounted for a 2, 64% of the total number. Although the total number of trials is low, their value is remarkable for the information quality and also for the topics. CONCLUSION: Handy search is an effective method for detection of controlled or aleatory trials that fullfill quality standars. They give a base to the review research carry out by Cochrane Colaboration.

ANTECEDENTES: La búsqueda manual de ensayos clínicos controlados y aleatorios es un factor determinante en la preparación de revisiones sistemáticas cuyo contenido depende, en gran medida, de su utilización. La realización de estas revisiones es una de las iniciativas desarrolladas por la Colaboración Cochrane con el propósito de suministrar información de calidad, en forma eficiente, a los profesionales de la salud. OBJETIVOS: Identificar los ensayos clínicos publicados en las revistas biomédicas cubanas. MÉTODOS: Se revisaron manualmente 1 618 artículos en 27 títulos de revistas cubanas de medicina o afines. Cada trabajo se examinó de acuerdo con los requerimientos establecidos por la Colaboración para la identificación de los ensayos aleatorios. Dicha revisión se complementó con búsquedas automatizadas en las bases de datos Medline, Cumed y otras disponibles en el web de Infomed. Finalmente, se creó una base de datos con las referencias bibliográficas de los trabajos seleccionados. RESULTADOS: Se identificaron 75 trabajos que cumplieron los criterios de selección establecidos. La búsqueda manual permitió hallar 61 (81,33%) de los 75 artículos resultantes de la revisión. La revista Biotecnología Aplicada, continuación de Interferón y Biotecnología, fue la revista más productiva con 34 trabajos, el 45,33% de los obtenidos. El número total de artículos revisados durante el período de investigación, 1999-2002, asciende a 6 351 y los ensayos identificados, a 168. Ellos constituyen el 2,64% del total examinado. Aunque el número total de ensayos detectados es pequeño, su valor es notable tanto por la calidad de la información como por las temáticas cubiertas. CONCLUSIONES: La búsqueda manual es un método eficiente para la detección de los ensayos controlados y aleatorios, que cumplan con estándares de calidad. Ellos constituyen la base del trabajo de revisión que realiza la Colaboración Cochrane.
