English abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of informetrics and scientometrics in the national and international perspective, noting their uses and practices. Beginning with some definitions of bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics, this paper discusses the role of science as a social process aiming at identifying the limitations of science indicators.

Spanish abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir el papel de la informetría y de la cienciometría desde la perspectiva nacional e internacional con el análisis de su aplicación en la práctica. En principio, se presentan las definiciones de bibliometría, cienciometría e informetría, para luego abordar el papel de la ciencia como proceso social, con el fin de identificar las limitaciones de los indicadores científicos. Asimismo se describen algunas dificultades que obstaculizan el desarrollo de los indicadores científicos.
