English abstract

A brief exposition is made on the situation of psychiatrist patients in Cuba from the colonial times up to the beginning of the second half of the 19th century when the first actions towards a more or less systematic care of these persons were taken. The paper mentions the first paper published about this discipline in the island, the most ancient Cuban original study on this subject and other related publications that came out between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Finally, there is a brief analysis of the contents of the book entitled “TRATADO DE ALINEACION MENTAL”(Mental alienation treatise), published in 1863 in Havana, which is the first among the most complete works written about this subject at the time of Spanish domination.

Se hace una breve exposición de la situación de los enfermos psiquiátricos en Cuba durante la etapa colonial hasta comienzos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en que se realizaron las primeras acciones orientadas a su atención de forma más o menos sistemática. Se mencionan el primer trabajo publicado en la isla sobre la disciplina, el estudio original cubano más antiguo en la materia y otras publicaciones al respecto que vieron la luz entre finales del siglo XVIII y la primera mitad del XIX. Por último se hace un sucinto análisis del contenido del libro titulado Tratado de alienación mental, obra publicada en La Habana en 1863 y que ostenta la primicia entre las más completas de las producidas sobre el tema en la época del dominio español.
