English abstract

Through history, the mission of the librarian has been the same one: to provide information that the user needs. The service of reference facilitates the access to the information and that helps the user to locate it. But this service has undergone changes throughout the time, and it has been seen specially affected by the advance of the technology. In this article, the author considers some common aspects in developed countries and our country; and also, he provides some useful elements to help to the professional of BCI in the performance of his work like reference librarian to provide an efficient service to the user. Finally he concludes saying that the reference service needs to concentrate in the particular necessities of the user, and not to group.

Spanish abstract

A través de la historia la misión del profesional en Bibliotecología y Ciencia de la Información ha sido la misma: la de proveer información que el usuario necesita. El servicio de referencia facilita el acceso a la información y que ayuda al usuario a ubicarla. Pero este servicio ha sufrido cambios a lo largo del tiempo, y se ha visto especialmente afectado por el avance de la tecnología. En este trabajo, su autor considera algunos aspectos comunes en países desarrollados y en nuestro país; e igualmente, proporciona algunos elementos útiles para ayudar al profesional de BCI en el desempeño de su trabajo como referencista en su labor diaria de proporcionar un servicio eficiente al usuario. Finalmente concluye diciendo que el servicio de referencia necesita concentrarse en las necesidades particulares de los usuario, y no agrupar o tratar de generalizar las necesidades reales de información de los mismo.
