English abstract

One of the transformations on the production, archiving, access and information retrieval of scientific communication has been the appearance of open access digital journals and repositories. Universities and research centers are creating scientific literature eprint servers, which include electronic versions of scientific documents published or unpublished, deposited by authors and editors from all scientific areas. These information technologies allow publishing commentaries, notes and new versions of research data that have been published in traditional formats or it is expected to be published in the future. The Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology Information (IBICT), within its mission of promoting the improvement of science, technology and innovation in Brazil, has been working in the development of tools that may help in disseminating the scientific production in the fields of Library and Information Science. Considering this context, the Institute has had several iniciatives with the purposes of creating digital repositories and promoting open access to digital contents, following international standards and participating in corporate initiatives. This essay puts in perspective the transformations of scientific communications within the Information Science in Brazil, particularly those related to open access digital journals and repositories. Also, the impact of Eprints to Library and Information Science server (E-LIS) in the brazilian community of scientific information is presented as an strategy in integrating locally generated knowledge to the global content disseminated by E-LIS.
