English abstract

Knowledge visualization uses visual representations of knowledge in order to improve the acquirement and the transfer of knowledge by knowledge workers. Tasks and applications in this research field are multi-disciplinary and manifold. To be able to deal with this complexity, a research approach based on case studies enabling the analysis and documentation for a set of characteristic applications is presented in this paper. For this purpose, a uniform structure for case studies is introduced, which is the basis for a comparative analysis of a collection of case studies and a systematic evaluation of the assigned visualization techniques.

German abstract

Die Visualisierung von Wissen nutzt visuelle Repräsentationen von Wissensbeständen, um den Erwerb und den Transfer von Wissen durch WissensarbeiterInnen zu verbessern. Dieses Forschungsfeld ist durch seine Multidisziplinarität und Vielfältigkeit der Aufgaben und Einsatzmöglichkeiten gekennzeichnet. Um diese Komplexität abdecken zu können, wird ein Forschungsansatz basierend auf Fallstudien vorgestellt, der die Analyse und Dokumentation einer Reihe von charakteristischen Anwendungsfällen ermöglicht. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine einheitliche Struktur für Fallstudien eingeführt, auf deren Basis eine vergleichende Analyse einer Sammlung von Fallstudien und eine systematische Evaluierung der eingesetzten Visualisierungstechniken durchgeführt werden kann.
