English abstract

The Document is a VISION 2020 statement prepared by a State Agricultural the University (SAU) Librarian. Kerala Agricultural University in India established in 1971 appointed the first University Librarian in 1995. The library and information services provided through more than 40 campuses from 1971 were reorganized into an integrated system and a unit like those meant for research, extension, etc in SAU. The statement evaluates the library and information services under the university in a historical perspective, explains the current mandate of the unit and those proposed for the future. The infrastructure and facilities developed as part of the modernization effort are examined in detail. Achivements of the system after the filling up of the managerial position is analyzed in comparison with that existed earlier. Impact of the system is analyzed along with input- output assessment, and a discussion of lessons learned during the development. Shortcomings are identified. The strength and weakness of the information handling scenario existing is analyzed. Identifies the existing threats that are to be overcome. The position of the system is assessed in its technological perspective. The issues requiring the immediate attention are listed and strategies planned to solve them are outlined. The programmes identified and planned by the unit for the next two decades are discussed under different functional heads. The important inputs and outputs are discussed. The methods and sources for generation of required resources to sustain the system are outlined. This document based on direct experience and original plan documents can guide those who have to knit together various components of similar systems existing uncoordinated and without common goals for long time, and help to frame and uphold the objectives of information systems that can contribute to quality in agricultural education, research, extension and development.
