English abstract

In Information Society individuals need to become information literates which means having acquired the skills to access and use information from a variety of sources effectively. Educational institutions have the primary responsibility for providing the students with these skills. The objectives of this research are to assert the theoretical basis of information literacy(IL); to determine if students of Hacettepe University(HU) have these skills and to identify their problems and to develop a proposal for IL program applicable for HU. In this study, based on survey method, data were gathered through questionnaires and literature analysis. Questionnaires were applied to 262 graduate students at HU. Findings were evaluated by “t Test” and “Variant Analysis” methods. In conclusion while this study has revealed that students have some difficulties in terms of IL skills it has also proved our hypothesis that the lack of IL Program in HU is the major obstacle for the students who are searching, obtaining, accessing, evaluating, using and communicating information.

Turkish abstract

Anket sorularının olusturulmasında, Amerikan Üniversite ve Arastırma Kütüphaneleri Dernegi’nin (Association of College and Research Libraries-ACRL)yüksekögretim için bilgi okuryazarlıgı standartlarında geçen konular esas alınmıstır. Anket, H.Ü. Sosyal Bilimler, Fen Bilimleri ve Saglık Bilimleri enstitülerinde yüksek lisans egitimine devam eden 262 kisiye uygulanmıstır. Bulguların degerlendirmesinde “t testi” ve “tek yönlü varyans analizi” kullanılmıstır. Arastırma sonunda ögrencilerin bilgi okuryazarlığı konularında zorlandıkları anlasılmıs ve “H.Ü. kütüphanelerinde yürütülmekte olan etkin bir bilgi okuryazarlığı programının olmaması, üniversite ögrencilerinin bilgiyi arama, bulma, elde etme, degerlendirme, kullanma ve iletme konularında zorlanmalarına neden olmaktadır” seklindeki hipotezimiz kanıtlanmıstır.
