English abstract

This treatise aims at analysing the initiatives for creating applied software for managing libraries conceived as open source; it will deal more specifically only with projects regarding the integrated management of traditional libraries, that is libraries based on what they own. A further inclusion criterion meant that only those initiatives conceived in the full respect of the rules and standards of libraries, catalogues and the exchange of these data in electronic form were considered. These rules and standards had been approved and shared by the international library community and by the national library agencies, such as for example the cataloguing codes, MARC, Z39.50, etc. Initiatives that have already produced usable software were dealt with more extensively; of the others - including those abandoned - mention is made while placing however greater emphasis on those that represented a significant moment in the progress of the open source ILS; having given life to software that is usable or not was also adopted as a criterion for grouping projects into two categories. All those initiatives for which information was gathered from Internet were considered.

Questo articolo vuole analizzare le iniziative per la creazione di applicazioni software open source per gestire biblioteche; tratta più specificamente solo dei progetti relativi alla gestione integrata di biblioteche tradizionali, cioè di biblioteche basate su ciò che possiedono. Un ulteriore criterio di inclusione ha fatto sì che siano state considerate solo quelle iniziative concepite in pieno rispetto delle regole e degli standard delle biblioteche, dei cataloghi e dello scambio di dati in formato elettronico. Tali regole e standard sono stati approvati e condivisi dalla comunità bibliotecaria internazionale e dalle agenzie bibliografiche nazionali: per esempio i codici di catalogazione, il MARC, lo Z39.50, ecc. Sono state oggetto di trattazione più estensiva le iniziative che hanno già prodotto software utilizzabile; le altre - incluse quelle abbandonate - sono state semplicemente menzionate, ponendo comunque più enfasi su quelle che rappresentavano un momento significativo nel progresso dell'ILS open source; l'aver dato vita a software che sia utilizzabile o meno è stato un altro criterio adottato per raggruppare i progetti in due categorie. Si sono considerate tutte quelle iniziative per cui erano disponibili informazioni su Internet.
