The paper discusses the aims and objectives of public libraries from the view point of Indian villager. It observes that public libraries in India are still going on without set objectives. The author lists the major objectives for which public libraries especially those in the villages should function. They should help the life long self education of the people, furnish up to date facts and information, distribute in an unbiased and balanced way all shades of recorded views and thoughts, provide to one and all a harmless and elevating use of leisure and should work for the continued social well being as the agency in charge of information for the people.
