English abstract

Until the end of last year, the Austrian Dissertations Database was operated by the Austrian Research Centers GmbH (ARC), Seibersdorf, for the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture. It contains most of the doctoral theses accepted by Austrian universities from 1990 on (approximately 30,000). In 2004 this database became part of the Austrian Library Network and has been continued there, in co-operation with the Austrian university libraries. After the selection and adaptation of the OPUS software by the Austrian Library Network & Service Ltd (OBVSG) the new version of the dissertations database went operational in 2004. This application continues to offer some well proven functionalities of the previous version but also aims at the best possible integration into the Austrian Union Catalogue and the media server, both also operated by OBVSG. The use of up-to-date standards such as Dublin Core and OAI, as well as the further development of OPUS (XMetaDiss), will make sure that a nation-wide metadata pool for Austrian dissertations and theses can be established and maintained.

Die Österreichische Dissertationsdatenbank wurde bis Ende letzten Jahres von den Austrian Research Centers GmbH (ARC) in Seibersdorf im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur erstellt und enthält einen Großteil der in Österreich approbierten Dissertationen ab 1990 (ca. 30.000). Ab 2004 wurde sie in den Bereich des Österreichischen Bibliothekenverbundes übertragen und wird dort in Zusammenarbeit mit den österreichischen Universitätsbibliotheken weiter aufgebaut und betreut. Nach Auswahl der Software OPUS sowie wesentlicher Adaptierungen durch die Österreichische Bibliothekenverbund und Service GmbH (OBVSG) konnte in diesem Jahr die Österreichische Dissertationsdatenbank NEU in Betrieb genommen werden. Ziel der neuen Anwendung ist es, bewährte Funktionalitäten der 'Seibersdorfer' Lösung beizubehalten, sie jedoch optimal in die Anwendungen 'Verbundkatalog' sowie 'Medien-Server' zu integrieren. Unabhängig von den universitären Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der elektronischen Hochschulschriftenverwaltung ist es das Ziel der OBVSG, auch für diese Dokumente einen österreichweiten Metadaten-Pool aufzubauen. Durch Unterstützung moderner Standards wie Dublin Core und OAI sowie die Weiterentwicklung von OPUS (XMetaDiss) scheinen die Voraussetzungen dafür gegeben zu sein.
