English abstract

The New Immigrants Centers at the Austin Public library are a combination of products and services oriented towards the immigrant community. The goal is to help this community to improve their quality of life and to have more opportunities in the U.S society. Currently, 6 public libraries have a Center and two more are running a pilot to implement their own centers later. Most immigrants are not used to going to the libraries and they are also afraid, those who are undocumented, these factors make it difficult to attract members of this community to the libraries. Public libraries, however, rise to the challenge. With the help of volunteers, public libraries offer ESL classes, literacy and computer classes.

Los Centros para el Nuevo Inmigrante de la Biblioteca Pública de Austin son una combinación de materiales y servicios orientados a la comunidad de inmigrantes de la ciudad de Austin en Texas con el objetivo de ayudar a esta comunidad a mejorar su calidad de vida y oportunidades en la sociedad estadounidense. Actualmente hay 6 bibliotecas públicas en esta ciudad que cuentan con estos centros y dos más están en ofreciendo algunos servicios orientados a esta comunidad. Características propias a la comunidad de inmigrante como el hecho de que muchos no acostumbran ir a las bibliotecas o el miedo en caso de que se encuentren indocumentados son algunos de los factores que hacen difícil el atraer a la comunidad a utilizar estos servicios. Las bibliotecas públicas, sin embargo, enfrentan el reto y con la ayuda de voluntarios de la misma comunidad ofrecen clases de inglés, educación de adultos y computación entre otros.
